Looking for Individual Therapy?

Having a good recovery program usually includes a few different essential pieces:

1) Get in a recovery group
2) Get a sponsor
3) Work your program
4) Get an individual therapist

Do you need individual therapy? This is a good question. You already have a sponsor. You’re already in a support group that has helped you tremendously. What would therapy do? Good support groups are essential to recovery. They provide support, challenge, and direction that can last throughout your life and help you maintain your sobriety. Therapy meets a different set of needs.

For some, the process of recovery has been difficult and they need extra support. You may have had a difficult time staying sober or staying away from addictive behaviors and are feeling the need for extra help with the process of recovery.

For some people, the use of different substances or compulsive behaviors has an emotional purpose. Using substances and behaviors is often a way of dealing with uncomfortable, painful, or difficult emotions. For others, the problematic use of drugs, food, gambling, or sex is a reflection of problems that happened growing up that never got resolved or even talked about. Therapy often allows someone to find out what need the alcohol/drug/behavior is meeting? What purpose does it achieve? Why turn there than somewhere else? And how did this pattern start and develop? What is the background? Some people go through their program, participate like they should, answer when they must, and continue on with completely unresolved issues of what is behind their use. Dealing with those unresolved issues may be at the core of why relapses continue to happen or why recovery has yet to feel truly freeing.

This then is the purpose of individual therapy: getting more support during the process of recovery, discovering what the use has done or what purpose it filled; learning what the things are in someone’s background that made use an option to dealing with life’s issues; discovering what freedom really feels like.
